Overview

This project integrates business analysis, large-scale data integration, and interactive dashboard development to uncover key trends in the U.S. airline industry.  

Combining 30 raw CSV files from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the project delivers a Power BI dashboard that enables dynamic exploration of airline operations across time, passenger and cargo types, and destinations.

  • Power BI:
    Dashboard development, visual analytics, DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) for custom metrics.
  • Python (pandas, Jupyter Notebook):
    Data integration, preprocessing, exploratory data analysis.

Dataset

  • Primary data:
    Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), 30 CSV files covering U.S. airline operational metrics (2000–2022), including:
    • Revenue Passenger Miles
    • Available Seat Miles
    •  Load Factor
    •  Revenue Aircraft Miles Flown
    •  Freight Ton Miles
  • Challenges: Fragmented files, missing values, inconsistent formats.

 

  • Secondary data:
    Statista Aviation Market Overview (View here)
    • Used to supplement business research and validate key insights derived from operational data.
    • High-level aviation industry statistics and market trends.


Highlights & Methodology

  • Business Research: Analyzed market segmentation, revenue trends, and macro-level challenges such as the impact of COVID-19.
  • Data Integration: Developed Python scripts to ingest, merge, and clean 30 raw datasets, preparing them for downstream analysis.
  • Custom Metrics: Applied DAX calculations in Power BI (e.g., Load Factor = Revenue Passenger Miles / Available Seat Miles).
  • Interactivity: Built dynamic filters (time range, aircraft type, destination) for stakeholder-driven exploration.
